CAN YOU WAIT FOR THE WINTER SEASON TO OPEN? I CANT! WELL WE HAVE TO...winter season opens up on january 1st! what a way to start off the new year... what to use and where you might be asking... well first throw out nymphs; mainly princes, brassies, and you might get some on pheasant tails and hares ears. BUT use bead heads, its a must! The fly is not going to drop to the bottom just because you have a bead head, the wieght will drop it maybe 6 inches, what its really for is so that it brings it down a bit and so its not being whipped around. 2nd, well your prolly asking me how can i get on the bottom where the fish are? well you need split shots, nothing too heavey, you can always add more, ive used up to 4 beadheads before! it may not be pretty casting but you will pull out those beasts off the bottom. 3rd where to fish em you ask? well hit pools. POOLS POOLS POOLS! the water will be cold, the fish are going to try to get as deep as possible, so hit pools right after fast water, white water, rapids. This is were they will be and you will pull out more and huge fish by doing this. 4th... STRIKE INDICATORS, you need em, i wouldnt bother with the sticky ones that clamp on because your going to be changine depths... you may fish 4 feet then you could have a 8ft pool. Yarn strike indicators, the foam ball strike indicators work. 5th leader, your gonna need a lot of line to get if your hitting deep pools. Somethings i just use a 10ft leader. sometimes ill use a 12ft, it all depends on how high the water might be too. take note: the goto fly is the bead headed prince nymph! good luck and see ya out there on jan 1st... any questions email me... tnt03468@aol.com erik

the streams are in good condition, i suggest using terrestrials. i was out yesterday caught 4 in one spot. theyll be sitting by the banks, try if you can stay out of the water and throw ants, hoppers, any top water was working and cast close to grassy shorelines n let it drift. try to use small flies because some trout theyre hesatant and its harder to catch em good luck
8/19/2005
well its never really too late cause trout have to eat sometime, its just a matter of finding them and the right time and the right fly. but GO OUT, its great the water preasures were very but now the dnr tested and they are back to normal! so get out there, look for using adams, midges, caddis and mayflys! and remember its still summer so afternoon use those hoppers and teresterials!
8/12/2005
Where are the trout biting in SE MN streams. I know its late in the season, but there has to be some hot streams? Thanks for the tip.
8/2/2005
hey, streams right now in SE mn are doing so so. water is high then gets back to normal with the warm weather, looks like rain coming this week til thursday or friday, so if you can get out before that itd be the best time to be fishing. some streams will stay in good condition after the weather, it just depends how much rain they get. some areas have gotten up to 6 inches. i suggest using something to get down in the water, nymphs, wet flys, really anything and jsut see what theyll take, itll help if you have bead heads on. oh and Kevin have u fished Christmas Lake? i guess the stock it with trout every year, and the water is reallly reallly clear, and isnt fished a lot. Got any pointers for catch n some on the lake i would love to know! thanx

fly-fish Rush River in El Paso, WI! ye!
7/14/2005
Got out this weekend. Used a streamer on the outer edge of the weed beds and caught a 16 inch crappie! What a pleasant surprise. Used dragon fly nymphs on the outer of the weed bed and caught 3 trout on Blue Lake. The water is warm on the surface so you will need to use a sinking line. Good luck hope to see you on the lake! If you see me in a yellow float tube, say hi.

Well we lost a family member this 4th of July to a drunk driver. A loss like this makes you stop to reflect on the good times you had with your loved ones and long for more time together. I will go fishing this weekend and think about all the wonderful times we had together. I will laugh and cry but more importantly I will be fly fishing and remember those who have passed before me. Who knows, I might even catch a fish.
7/7/2005
well, heres the deal as you may know its summer, the weather is starting to get nice and well......... HOTTER. Streams as of now in SW minnesota are look good. right now fish in the mornings and evenings, but then during that hot afternoon, dont call it quits, start throwing out some bealtes, black ants along the banks. try experimenting w/ diffrent patterns of ants and beatles and look around, look to see if there beatles and ants around and see what color they are. you will have more sucess when throwing this fly by over hanging brush, tall grasses, fallen trees, when u get the point, get out there and fish.
7/4/2005
well, its the 4th. was out over the weekend in SW minnesota and its slow, some good areas. it depends where, so get out and go and see what happens!
6/20/2005
Went out on a local trout lake this weekend and got skunked. I left my sinking line at home so I was limited to fishing bead head nymphs and drys. Limited surface activity due to the water temp. The surface temp was 70 F. Will go back out with sinking line and let you know how it went.

I live in Aitkin MN. Blue Lake is about 5 miles west of town and has been very productive this Spring. I have been using chrinonomids and a pheasant tail bead head nymph emerger size 16 both have worked well. when calm size 18 black drys work well just cast at the surfacing fish. A float tube or canoe is a must as a portage is the only access to the lake which helps cut down the crowds. Many times I am the only person fishing the lake so come up and give it a try. Rainbows are the only trout in the lake. Generally ranging from 12 to 14 inches I have caught 2, 20 inch fish right after the opener. MOst of the locals troll Rapalas from a canoe and catch a few.

I fished the Vermillion once in July or August 2004. A number of people access the river at Biscayne Avenue - be sure to check on property ownership and permission. I made sure to contact the property owner for the section I fished before going in. I caught two browns - one 10" and one 12". There does appear to be good habitat. I know that the DNR did an electro-shock survey, and found several large (20"+) fish.
2/20/2005
yes i understand that it isnt listed on the dnr web page. but if you goto to http://www.twincitiestu.org/ if tells you about the vermillion, and yes now it is frozen but by spring opener it should be awsome fishing. ive only fished in the hastings area of the vermillion. i have been told tho that the best part of the stream is in farmington, not too far away from hastings at all.
2/4/2005
Eric, I do not think that the Vermillion is open during the Winter Trout Season. I did not see it on any of the DNR lists for open water during the winter.
2/4/2005
If you are in the St Paul area try Summit Fly Shop on Grand Avenue. It is about 2 blocks east of Victoria. Tell the owner, Paul, that Jeff C sent you. Good luck.
1/31/2005
personally, i think the best shop would be Bentleys outffiters in eden praire, i would check out there site www.bentleysoufitters.com otherwise if thats really far, i would goto like ganermountain or something but bentleys will forsure hook you put with the supplies and flys you need to catch fish here or even if your planning a trip somewhere else, trust me go there if possible!

HELP!!! I just moved here from Montana and am having severe fly fishing withdrawals. Can anybody point me in the direction of a good fly shop?
1/2/2005
just recently fished the vermillion river in hastings 2 weeks ago. it was slow fishing, couldnt find one fish. the vermillion has many trout and many people think its dirty and just filled with carp. well i fished in Hastings and didnt have luck there. i dont know if they were up stream in Farmington or closer to the dam. I went out on fly fishing winter opener, yesterday. the vermillion was frozen. i went to someother rivers and streams to find on that wasnt frozen and fished one. I fished a stream very slow because of the cold and the fish arent going to be as active. i caught 2 trout the whole and got out of there before the ice storm.
9/22/2004

Visiting Ely this summer and want to fly fish. Are there any places around Ely to fish for trout? Thanks, Sue Davis
6/16/2002
As found on Minnesota DNR site: Improved soil conservation techniques and reduced erosion mean cleaner water and more trout with less stocking. It also means that there are more trout available now than at any time in the past 30 years. According to more than 2,400 DNR fish population surveys, the trout population in southeastern Minnesota has tripled since 1970 and the average number of browns more than 12 inches long increased from 26 per stream mile in the 1970s to 55 in the 1990s.
