Sierra Club is a sponsor of Kids Activities at the Southern Illinois Hunting & Fishing Days Celebration (http://sihfd.org) Sept 24 & 25, 2005. We are looking for volunteers to show kids how to cast a fly rod. This event is attended by 25,000 people, with a major emphasis on introducing children to all hunting and fishing sports.
Let me know if there is anyone out there that would like to spend a weekend in beautiful Southern Illinois and a few hours helping out at the Kids Fly Fishing area.

Am new to fly fishing. Looking for help on how to catch trout in dark water of the Fox.
Tried the Fox river south of Buffalo Campground (Algonquin). I always see Carp jumping there when I bottom fish. Got a fly rod and waders and learned to cast. Spent the day throwing flies trying to catch top feeding Carp with no luck. Anybody got any suggestions for how to grab these jumpers in that dark water?

I fished the South Branch of the Kishwaukee River in DeKalb, IL today behind Hopkins Park along Sycamore Road (Route 23). I must have caught nearly 50 or more fish!! I was wading in knee to mid-thigh deep water and casting along the bank under trees and along rocks. I mostly caught Rock Bass that were on average 8 inches long with some running larger. I only took in a few Smallmouth Bass of decent size. Olive colored Wooley Buggers and Black Poppers were my successful choices today! The water quality was good and the fish were not spooky at all. My English, Black Lab waded with me the whole time, which usually bothers the fish and frustrates me, not this time.

I got bored with the stubborn Smallies at Somonauk Creek, so I went a few miles east to Little Rock Creek which is also along IL Route 34 located between the small towns of Sandwich, IL and Plano, IL. Again, parked the truck by the bridge and waded south from that point about 350 yards. This stream proved to be a lot better! The water quality is much better and water visibility is good! Many more Smallies here. About every other cast you can anticipate catching a small Creek Chub, especially at the bottom of the riffles. They are every where in this stream.

Today I fished Somonauk Creek along IL Route 34 between the small towns of Somonauk, IL and Sandwich, IL. Somonauk Creek feeds Lake Holiday. There are a fair amount of decent size smallmouth bass holding in the pools. The water quality is a bit murky, but okay to spot fish. Parked the truck by the bridge just off the highway, and put in the water just below the BNSF Railroad bridge.

The Kishwaukee River south of Rockford, IL has been good for Smallies. I typically wade and fish with a flyrod. May need to use a slip shot or weighted fly to get deep enough.

We may not have trout fishing except for put
and take.but if you want a nice free stone
stream to fish try Apple River Canyon State
Park up west of Rockford. The stream is used
for put and take trout fishing in the spring
and ther is acarry over because the water
stays cold enough to support trout. The stream is also a good smallmouth stream.
